Medicine Transport / Medical Clinic

Serving the Mapuche tribe   IAM missionaries have been working with the Mapuche Indians of Chile since March 2000. Beginning with two families, as of June 2004 over 150 have been touched by the work. The church continues to grow through the multiplication of cell groups in the urban sector as well as in the rural areas, reaching out to the Mapuche
communities. More than 60 Mapuche families have directly benefited from the construction of greenhouses and production of horticultural projects. More than 800 families have benefited from the program of seed distribution as well as medical clinics that are offered. Missionaries have discipled new believers and ministered to families. Cell groups in the community meet twice monthly. Chilean missionaries are training indigenous leaders in each community. IAM is building communities at different stages. The missionaries have good relationships with flower growers in each community, representing 15 Mapuche communities. These are like small reservations common among North American indigenous populations.

Transporting medicine to remote areas   In the medical area IAM sees great potential. In many communities small clinics try to serve the basic health needs of the people. Most of these clinics are financed in part by the municipal government, yet there is a lack of resources to meet the physical needs of residents in each community. IAM hopes to come alongside an established clinic to help its medical work by developing a system among the clinics to transport medicine to Mapuche homes. One couple, in charge of a larger clinic serving 400 families, would distribute medicine, hygiene products and clothing to households, providing food if needed. IAM wants to reach places that are difficult to access; having missionaries living in those places for the short-term would allow for follow-up with families.

Serving communities through base clinic   Illnesses that require more prolonged treatment could be served by a base clinic for treatments. IAM missionaries could help transport people from the rural areas to the clinic. This clinic would also serve as an administrative base for all the communities involved in the project.

Financing the vision: $65,000   Funding is needed to purchase medicine and basic instruments for the larger clinic serving 400 Mapuche. The couple would serve households that cannot travel to the clinics in the winter. Funds are also required to finance an exploration trip. The Lautaro couple would take two paramedics with equipment, medicine, clothing and food to the mountain zone of Lonquimay in the Andes to test the viability of the project. A second trip would be planned with more supplies based on the results of this first excursion.
